چکیده

We analyze different volume–limited samples extracted from the Southern Sky Redshift Survey (SSRS2), using counts–in–cells to compute the Count Probability Distribution Function (CPDF).From the CPDF we derive volume– averaged correlation functions to fourth order and the normalized skewness and kurtosis S3 = ξ̄3/ξ̄2 2 and S4 = ξ̄4/ξ̄2 3 . We find that the data satisfies the hierarchical relations in the range 0.3 <∼ξ̄2 <∼10. In this range, we find S3 to be scale-independent with a value of ∼ 1.8, in good agreement with the values measured from other optical redshift surveys probing different volumes, but significantly smaller than that inferred from the APM angular catalog. In addition, the measured values of S3 do not show a significant dependence on the luminosity of the galaxies considered. This result is supported by several tests of systematic errors that could affect our measures and estimates of the cosmic variance determined from mock catalogs extracted from N-body simulations. This result is in marked contrast to what would be expected from the strong dependence of the two-point correlation function on luminosity in the framework of a linear biasing model. We discuss the implications of our results and compare them to some recent models of the galaxy distribution which address the problem of bias. Subject headings: cosmology, galaxies: clustering, large-scale structure of the universe, biasing.

The Power Spectrum of Galaxies in the Nearby Universe1

We compute the power spectrum of galaxy density uctuations in a recently completed redshift survey of optically-selected galaxies in the southern hemisphere (SSRS2). The amplitude and shape of the SSRS2 power spectrum are consistent with results of the Center for Astrophysics redshift survey of the northern hemisphere (CfA2), including the abrupt change of slope on a scale of 30 50h 1Mpc; these...

We investigate the variation of galaxy clustering with luminosity using the recently completed SSRS2 sample. Clustering measurements based on the two-point correlation function and the variance of counts in cells reveal a strong dependence of clustering on luminosity for galaxies brighter than L * , while no significant variation is detected for fainter galaxies. Galaxy & Cluster Biasing from Local Group Dynamics

Comparing the gravitational acceleration induced on the Local Group of galaxies by different tracers of the underline density field we estimate, within the linear gravitational instability theory and the linear biasing ansatz, their relative bias factors. Using optical SSRS2 galaxies, IRAS (PSCz) galaxies and Abell/ACO clusters, we find bO,I ≈ 1.21 ± 0.06 and bC,I ≈ 4.3 ± 0.8, in agreement with...

Table 1. Correlation function parameters, semi-volume limited samples. Sample s0 γs σ8 r0 γr σ8

We use the two-point correlation function to calculate the clustering properties of the recently completed SSRS2 survey, which probes two well separated regions of the sky, allowing one to evaluate the sensitivity of sample-to-sample variations. Taking advantage of the large number of galaxies in the combined sample, we also investigate the dependence of clustering on the internal properties of...
